Strong female portrayals counteract negative effects of violent media for young adults

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Men and women are less likely to experience negative effects to sexual violent media when watching a positive portrayal of a strong female character, even when that character is a victim of sexual violence.

Christopher Ferguson, Assistant Professor at Texas A&M International University, surveyed 150 university students in a controlled environment in a recent study published in the Journal of Communication. Each participant screened a variety of TV shows that portrayed women in different lights when it came to sexual violence. The results showed that men and women had less anxiety and negative reactions when viewing television shows that depicted a strong female character rather than a submissive one.

Past research has been inconsistent regarding the effects of sexually violent media on viewer's hostile attitudes toward women. Much of the previous literature has conflated possible variables such as sexually violent content with depictions of women as subservient.

The submissive characters often reflect a negative gender bias that women and men find distasteful. This outweighed the sexual violence itself, giving credence to what Ferguson calls the "Buffy Effect" -- named after the popular television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its strong lead female character.

"Although sexual and violent content tends to get a lot of attention, I was surprised by how little impact such content had on attitudes toward women. Instead it seems to be portrayals of women themselves, positive or negative that have the most impact, irrespective of objectionable content. In focusing so much on violence and sex, we may have been focusing on the wrong things," Ferguson said.

"While it is commonly assumed that viewing sexually violent TV involving women causes men to think negatively of women, the results of this carefully designed study demonstrate that they do so only when women are portrayed as weak or submissive," added Journal of Communication editor and University of Washington Professor Malcolm Parks. "Positive depictions of women challenge negative stereotypes even when the content includes sexuality and violence. In this way Ferguson reminds us that viewers often process popular media portrayals in more subtle ways than critics of all political stripes give them credit for."

Civic groups condemn Uganda oil secrecy

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? Transparency watchdogs say the closed-door arbitration between Uganda and the U.K.-listed Heritage Oil is the latest example of the secrecy plaguing the East African country's oil sector.

Private proceedings deny Ugandans the right to know how the country's oil wealth is being managed, the groups say. A tribunal in London is expected to start hearings Tuesday.

George Boden of Global Witness said Tuesday that Uganda's Western donors "need to question the hypocrisy of a London arbitration process which deprives Ugandan civil society of the ability to hold their own government to account on vast public assets."

The tribunal will decide if Heritage Oil should pay $435 million in a capital gains tax from the company's $1.45 billion sale of two Ugandan oil blocks to Tullow Oil in July 2010.

Biden postpones Florida travel over Isaac

Tampa - Vice President Joe Biden, who had scaled back planned campaign events in Florida this week because of the approach of Tropical Storm Isaac, has postponed his visit to the state altogether, the Obama campaign announced Saturday.

"Due to the statewide state of emergency declared in Florida, Vice President Biden's travel to Orlando and St. Augustine, Florida on Tuesday, August 28 for campaign events has been postponed," the campaign said in a statement. It was released shortly after the Republican National Committee said the party's convention events set for Monday would would now be postponed.

"This change in schedule is being taken to ensure that all law enforcement and emergency management resources across the state can continue their focus on ensuring the safety of those who might be impacted by the storm," the campaign said.

Biden had initially been slated to visit Tampa and other cities in Florida as part of an effort to counter the Republican message as the party readies to formally nominate Mitt Romney as its presidential candidate.

The rising Chinese political star appeared to be on the cusp of joining the country?s most exclusive club: the nine-member Standing Committee of the Communist Party?s Politburo. Last February, however, the chief of police in his city took refuge in the U.S. consulate, bringing with him a remarkable story: that Bo Xilai?s wife had murdered Neil Heywood, a British businessman. Now Bo has been stripped of all political positions. His wife Gu Kailai, in perhaps the most anticipated show-trial since the prosecution of the Gang of Four in 1981, received a suspended death sentence for the murder charge. For Bo Xilai, it has been the best of times and the worst of times?and just like that Dickens novel, everything might end up with a body double receiving the death sentence.

Earlier this month, Slate reported how China?s rich and powerful can hire body doubles to stand in for them at court and in prison. China?s tradition of substitute criminals?and even substitute executions?dates at least as far back as the mid-1600s, when the early Dominican missionary Domingo Fernandez Navarrete expressed shock at the ?ease and frequency with which wealthy convicts hired proxies to suffer punishments on their behalf.?* To put it another way, this practice, called ding zui in Chinese, has flourished in China for longer than the United States has existed.

The most recent allegations of a substitute criminal began the moment people saw Gu Kailai enter the courtroom. Gu?s appearance had changed so much that even her own relatives were confused. The New York Times reported that Gu ?appeared to have gained considerable weight, and a relative expressed shock, saying her face had changed dramatically since they had last met.? The Wall Street Journal wrote that Gu was ?a bit heavier and less glamorous than in photographs of her that have been published in news stories around the world since the scandal broke,? adding the explanation that most of the photographs ?were taken between five and 15 years ago ...?

Many in China, however, felt Gu looked different because she was different. Western expatriates were soon ?abuzz with talk that the woman who appeared in the dock? may be a body double. Chinese netizens began posting and circulating accusations of a criminal stand-in, which were quickly censored by the government, only to live on in snippet form as Google caches. For example, the cached form of one now-erased message containing hits for ?Gu Kailai? and ?ding zui? begins: ?I used to hear old folks talk about how in the old days, when somebody committed a crime, they could spend money and buy a person to be their substitute. Today, there are still people who can spend money and buy a person to be their substitute ?? (Clicking the link, however, results in the message: ?Sorry!? The page you are looking for doesn?t exist or has been deleted.?)

This Web page, which has so far survived, claims to show images of ?The Real and Fake Gu Kailai,? asserting: ?No matter how a person?s face might change, the facial structure, eyes, and the distance between the eyebrows remains the same. The angles of the photograph might have some effect on one?s appearance, but even so, the tip of an adult?s nose is never going to change. The photo of ?Gu Kailai? in court shows a nose that is clearly rounded and full with flesh at its tip, while the Gu Kailai in the photo with Bo Xilai has a sharply pointed nose.?

One viral rumor, remarkably detailed in its allegations, displays side-by-side images of the woman in court and Gu, together with the headline: ?Huge News: The woman who is the body double for Gu Kailai is a roughly 46 year-old Langfang resident named Zhao Tianyun.?? A subheading urges the public to work together through crowd-sourcing to solve the body double mystery. Several paragraphs then describe how the author supposedly learned from a friend working in the Chinese government that Zhao Tianyun was Gu?s body double, and that the real Gu is still living in Beijing. Apparently to prevent this message from spreading, the Chinese government has blocked all searches for the term ?ti-shen? (body double), a phrase appearing within this message, as well as searches for the name Zhao Tianyun.

While China certainly has substitute criminals?the media occasionally reports arrests of some would-be substitutes?it is difficult to estimate the frequency of the practice. With ding zui, the whole purpose of the crime is to prevent people from knowing it has even occurred. Since the only known instances of ding zui are those that have been solved, it is difficult to know whether it is a frequent crime rarely discovered or whether it is a rare crime frequently foiled. Further complicating things, wealthy and powerful families who can arrange criminal substitutes seem unlikely to be exposed by the police, government officials, or media.

SEAL who wrote bin Laden raid book identified

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Navy SEAL who wrote an account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden under a pseudonym was identified Thursday as Matt Bissonnette, who retired from the Navy last summer.

Bissonnette was first identified by Fox News. One current and one former U.S. military official confirmed the name, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss military personnel matters.

The book, "No Easy Day," is scheduled to be released Sept. 11, with the author listed under the pseudonym of Mark Owen. Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint, the publisher, asked news organizations Thursday to withhold his identity.

"Sharing the true story of his personal experience in 'No Easy Day' is a courageous act in the face of obvious risks to his personal security," Dutton spokeswoman Christine Ball said in a statement. "That personal security is the sole reason the book is being published under a pseudonym."

Bissonnette also changed the names of the other SEALs in the account, the publisher says.

Efforts to locate Bissonnette for comment were unsuccessful.

Special Operations Command spokesman Col. Tim Nye said the retired SEAL could be endangered by being identified, which could also expose those active-duty SEALs the author worked with in the killing of bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan last year.

The book and the author's name come out amid debate over the possible damage to U.S. national security by leaks in the media about top secret operations.

Yet the book also comes at a time when special operations forces are prominently featured in the media as never before, even as the elite organizations demand secrecy.

A rash of new books trumpet special operators' exploits. For example, "American Sniper," a best-seller by recently retired SEAL Chris Kyle, details his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009.

A handful of special operations advocacy groups have sprung up decrying leaks, but they identify themselves by name as former members of some of the elite units, in an online campaign video that slams President Barack Obama for releasing details of the bin Laden raid.

One of the advocacy groups is run by retired Navy SEAL Ryan Zinke, who prominently mentions his time years ago at SEAL Team 6, the top secret unit that carried out the bin Laden raid.

Even Special Operations Command made an exception to its normal reticence with the media when it signed off on the movie "Act of Valor," which followed active duty SEALs carrying out training exercises that were turned into what looked like real action scenes for the film.

The author of "No Easy Day" is slated to appear in shadow in promotional interviews for the book, meant to conceal his identity. CBS News' anchor Scott Pelley said Thursday evening that "60 Minutes" has interviewed the author and will air the interview on Sept. 9.

The book is already listed as one of the top 10 books on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com.

Beyond the risk he faces now that his identity is known, he could also face legal trouble if the Pentagon determines that he disclosed classified information in the account.

U.S. military and intelligence officials say they do not believe the book has been read or cleared by the Defense Department. The Pentagon reviews publications by military members ? both active duty and retired ? to make sure that no classified material is revealed.

Vatican win: Judge says priests aren't employees

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Vatican won a major victory Monday in an Oregon federal courtroom, where a judge ruled that the Holy See is not the employer of molester priests.

The decision by U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mosman ends a six-year question in the decade-old case and could shield the Vatican from possible monetary damages.

The original lawsuit was filed in 2002 by a Seattle-area man who said the Rev. Andrew Ronan repeatedly molested him in the late 1960s.

The plaintiff tried to show that Ronan and all priests are employees of the Vatican, which is therefore liable for their actions.

Mosman made a previous decision strictly on legal theory and determined that, if all the factual assertions made by the plaintiff's lawyers in the case were true and applicable, then the Vatican would indeed employ Ronan. But on Monday, Mosman said he looked at the facts in the case and didn't find an employer-employee relationship.

"There are no facts to create a true employment relationship between Ronan and the Holy See," Mosman said in his ruling from the bench.

Jeff Anderson, attorney for the plaintiff, said he will appeal the decision.

"While we're disappointed, of course, we're not discouraged," Anderson said.

Vatican attorney Jeff Lena said the case should put to rest the notion that the Holy See is liable for the actions of priests.

"This is a case in which, for the first time, a court in the U.S. has taken a careful, factual look at whether or not a priest in the U.S. can be viewed as an employee of the Holy See and the answer, unequivocally, was no," Lena said.

The case is the last major U.S. sex abuse lawsuit against the Holy See. Cases in Kentucky and Wisconsin have been dropped in recent years.

The plaintiffs argued that what they contend was Ronan's fealty to the Pope, the Vatican's ability to promote priests, the Vatican's laicization ? or removal ? process, and the ability to change priests' training all pointed to the Vatican employing priests.

"We believe that under further scrutiny," Anderson said in a news release, "the courts will find that Vatican protocols and practice make it clear that obedience to Rome required the secrecy and concealment practiced by priests and bishops as the clergy abuse crisis unfolded in the United States."

Lena said the Vatican had little to do with the laicization process unless a priest appealed, and points out that the appellate court will not further scrutinize the facts, but rather the application of the law in the case.

The impact of Mosman's ruling on other priest sex-abuse cases is not yet clear. The case has gone further than any other in attempting to get at the relationship between priests in the U.S. and the Vatican.

Douglas Laycock, a University of Virginia School of Law professor, said lawsuits against the Pope are usually dismissed on sovereign immunity grounds, with a U.S. court ruling that the Vatican can't be sued because there is no jurisdiction in the U.S. to do so.

"This was likely filed more to make a political statement," Laycock said.

Mosman took up several hypothetical analogies while questioning attorneys for both sides. He said that, for instance, the Oregon legal bar has many of the same powers over lawyers as the Vatican has over priests: It can disbar someone and issue sanctions, just as the Vatican can laicize priests, but doing so doesn't constitute a firing.

The plaintiffs were trying to show that, by exerting control, the Vatican was the priests' employer.

Mosman said that if he accepted the plaintiff's argument that the Vatican maintains absolute control over all priests, and is therefore their employer, then all Catholics everywhere could similarly be considered employees of the Holy See.

After the ruling, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, director David Clohessy said in a statement that the Vatican wants "to have their cake and eat it too" by varying their definition of the church, sometimes calling it a top-down hierarchical institution and other times asserting that only locals have control over their employee ? an assertion Lena said flies in the face of an appellate court ruling in 2009 and Monday's decision by Mosman.

"It's a shame that, once again, top Catholic officials successfully exploit legal technicalities to keep clergy sex crimes and cover ups covered up," Clohessy said. "The truth is that the Vatican oversees the church worldwide, insisting on secrecy in child sex cases and stopping or delaying the defrocking of pedophile priests."

T-Mobile brings back unlimited data plan

NEW YORK (AP) ? Unlimited wireless data is back. After sliding off the menu of cellphone plans, data plans with no caps are making a comeback at smaller wireless companies trying to compete with AT&T and Verizon.

T-Mobile USA, the nation's fourth-largest cellphone company, said Wednesday that it will start selling an unlimited-data plan again on Sept. 5, after stopping sales of such plans early last year. A day earlier, No. 5 carrier MetroPCS cut the price of its unlimited-data plan as a promotion for a limited time.

The moves by T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS, neither of which sells the iPhone, come as their three larger rivals are thought to be gearing up to begin selling the iPhone 5 in a month or so.

No. 3 carrier Sprint Nextel Corp. already has an unlimited-data plan and credits that with helping it attract customers for its smartphones.

AT&T, the nation's second-largest carrier, stopped signing up customers for unlimited data plans two years ago, while No. 1 Verizon Wireless stopped last year. Both have shifted toward lifting all limits on calls and texting, but limiting data usage.

From a network management perspective, that makes sense, as calls and texts use very little network capacity, while video downloads and other data use can clog the network and slow the service for everyone. The iPhone and the data use it encouraged initially caused big problems for AT&T in New York and San Francisco. Sprint's network is showing signs of congestion in some tests.

Limited-data plans pose problems for customers, however. It's easier to figure out how many minutes of calling you need in a month than it is to figure out how many gigabytes you'll use.

T-Mobile is launching the plan because it's what customers want, said Kevin McLaughlin, vice president of marketing at the Bellevue, Wash., company. He said the company is confident it can keep its network "fast and dependable" even with unlimited-data users on it.

T-Mobile's unlimited plan will cost $30 per month when added to a regular calling and texting plan and $20 when added to a cheaper "Value" plan offered to customers who bring their own phones. MetroPCS Communications Inc.'s unlimited plan will cost $55 per month during the promotion period, down from $70, and will include unlimited texting and calls.

T-Mobile had been calling all its data plans "unlimited," but once a customer hits a certain level of usage in a month, it would slow down speeds drastically. AT&T manages remaining subscribers on unlimited plans the same way. Under T-Mobile's new unlimited plans, all data would be at maximum speed.

T-Mobile's new plan will cost $5 less than a regular data plan with 5 gigabytes of full-speed data. The advantage of the limited plan is that subscribers can turn their phones into "mobile hotspots," linking tablets and computers to the Internet through the phone. That's not allowed under the unlimited plan.

T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS may have room on their networks, giving them some leeway, at least for now, in offering unlimited data.

T-Mobile has upgraded its network to higher speeds and is losing customers, in large part because it doesn't sell the iPhone.

MetroPCS, a Dallas-based cellphone company that targets low-income urban households, has nearly completed another network upgrade that enables higher data speeds, but only 8 percent of their customers can take advantage of it. The rest need new phones.

"The bottom line is they have capacity available to attract quite an influx of subscribers without pulling down the network," said Steven Crowley, an independent network engineering consultant.

T-Mobile USA is a unit of German phone company Deutsche Telekom AG and has 33.2 million subscribers. MetroPCS has 9.3 million.

Ford brings hybrid, EV work in-house to beat Toyota

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co, vying to beat Toyota Motor Co's record on fuel economy, is accelerating development of its hybrid and electric vehicles by bringing the design and production of key components in-house.

The No.2 U.S. automaker said Wednesday it will spend $135 million to design parts for its next wave of electrified vehicles and double its battery testing capability by next year.

This summer, Ford began building its own hybrid transmission. More than 1,000 Ford engineers are devoted to advanced vehicle development and Ford plans to hire more.

These efforts allow Ford to complete projects more swiftly and cut overall development costs, executives said. They also allow Ford to react more nimbly to changes in consumer demand.

"We're not wed to any one specific technology," said Kevin Layden, head of electrification programs and engineering. "I'm free to play the field and I'm very comfortable with that."

Improving fuel economy is a cornerstone of Ford's vehicle strategy. Ford expects hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs will account for as much as 25 percent of its global sales by 2020.

Ford this year is launching five electrified vehicles, including hybrid versions of the Fusion midsize sedan and C-Max crossover. The C-Max gets 47 miles per gallon, beating the Toyota Prius V, which gets 44 miles per gallon.

But Ford still lags far behind Toyota, which has dominated the market with its Prius hybrid family. So far this year, the Toyota brand has accounted for two-thirds of the U.S. hybrid and EV market, while the Ford brand represents 3 percent, according to Edmunds.com.

The high cost of batteries and electric drive components represents another challenge. To combat that, Ford, like other automakers, is increasingly looking to maximize the number of models and parts that can be built on a single line.

For example, Ford now builds a hybrid transmission at its Van Dyke Transmission Plant near Detroit. On one side of an aluminum palette, workers build a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. On the other side is the hybrid version.

Ford previously bought these transmissions from Japanese parts supplier Aisin. Bringing production in-house allowed Ford to shave 20 percent from development costs, partly by saving on shipping and component costs. The model also gives Ford the choice to build more or less depending on demand.

"It's not just cost savings. It's market opportunity as well," said David Cole, chairman emeritus for the Center for Automotive Research. "If your competitor has products but you don't, that's a problem."

Ford is also seeing savings from bringing battery design and testing internally after relying heavily on outside suppliers to design and test batteries for its earliest hybrids.

The expansion of battery testing allows Ford to finish projects at least 25 percent faster than with the previous generation of hybrid and electric vehicles.

The automaker said its current hybrid system costs 30 percent less than the previous version. The new system relies on a more-efficient lithium-ion battery, while the Ford's original Escape SUV hybrid used a nickel-metal hydride battery.

Both the leasehold and the fee for the property, held by TriState Equities and a Greek individual respectively, traded in the deal, which was valued at $42 million, the sources said. No brokers were involved in the transaction, which was confirmed by multiple people, but denied by Morris Missry of TriState Equities.

The nine-story building, which totals 38,052 square feet, was formerly used as the New York City franchise of Hefner?s Playboy nightclubs; opened in 1962, it was one of 40 in an international chain, which also included clubs in Miami, Chicago and New Orleans. Access to the club, which was recently portrayed in an episode of 1960s television drama ?Mad Men,? was granted only to keyholders, who had a real key decorated with the Playboy rabbit logo.

The deal is expected to close next week, sources said.

An LLC named 5 East 59 Realty Holding Company, headed by fur mogul Alexandros Demetriades, took title to the property in 1998, according to public records. It was not immediately clear when TriState Equities, a New York-based real estate investment and development firm headed by Missry and Joseph Edery, had taken the leasehold for the building. Missry denied that any transaction was in the works, saying only that the fee holder had received several offers. Demetriades could not be reached for comment.

The Italian restaurant Bottega del Vino, the New York City branch of a wine bar based in Verona, Italy, currently occupies the ground floor retail space at the property. A spokesperson for Bottega said the restaurant was not aware of the sale of the building.

The building is also home to the office of real estate mogul Elie Hirschfeld?s Hirschfeld Properties. Hirschfeld said he was aware that the building has been sold but declined to comment further.

Chael Sonnen says he is fighting Forrest Griffin, wants to make run at light heavyweight belt

Chael Sonnen hasn't given up his dream on winning a UFC world championship. For the time being though, he's giving up on winning it as a middleweight.

After a pair of losses to 185-pound king Anderson Silva, Sonnen announced Tuesday on UFC Tonight on Fuel TV that is jumping to light heavyweight and will fight Forrest Griffin on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.

"Chael wants to fight at 205," White said. "He felt he had his run at 185 and now he wants to make a run at the title at 205."

Sonnen, the master of trash talk, dumped on light heavyweight champion Jon Jones as he made his announcement. He said though he felt he could win the belt in his first bout in the division, he needed to win a fight in the division to set himself up as a legitimate contender.

As a result, Sonnen will fight Griffin. They met once already, on Sept. 6, 2003, on an International Fighting Championship card in Denver. Griffin won with a triangle choke submission in the first round. Ironically, Sonnen's title fight against Silva at UFC 117, which he dominated for four-and-a-half rounds, ended when Silva got the submission with a triangle.

"If he can beat Forrest, he'd be on his way [toward title contention]," White told Cagewriter. "Forrest has some good wins and he's an ex-light heavyweight champion. He has awesome credentials. Forrest is a big guy, a real big guy, and that will be a big test for Chael."

Jones will defend his championship at UFC 151 on Sept. 1 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas against Dan Henderson.

If Jones survives that fight, there are no logical contenders. White awarded the next title shot to Lyoto Machida after Machida knocked out Ryan Bader in Los Angeles on Aug. 4. Jones, though, has already beaten Machida.

Sonnen would inject a bit of life into the division. And though Jones would be a heavy favorite against him, Sonnen's wrestling would probably at least ensure that Jones wouldn't be able to easily take him down and beat him up with the vicious elbows for which he's become known.

First, though, Sonnen has to get through Griffin, whom he lavished with praise on UFC Tonight.

Since becoming friends and competitors with him, I've also become a fan. I watched him win the world championship. I watched him etch his name in stone as a guaranteed future Hall of Famer.

If Sonnen wins, he'd be in the mix for a shot in early 2013. What that would mean for Griffin's future isn't nearly as clear. White declined to say he'd force Griffin to retire as an active fighter should he lose, but the UFC president has raised the topic before.

White would likely do with Griffin what he did with Chuck Liddell, the ex-light heavyweight champion who kept getting knocked out in his final few fights. White publicly urged Liddell to retire and then gave him a front-office job with the UFC. He'd like do the same thing with Griffin.

Anderson never loses his core themes - young love, the need to escape, the bind and bluster of family. His "Kingdom" may not be large, but it is perfectly appointed.

Though undeniably smart and charming, "Moonrise Kingdom" loves itself the way the callow Holden Caulfield loves himself: unconditionally. Salinger understood the problem with that. Anderson may not.

The latest unadulterated delight from Wes Anderson, director of "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox."

The usual complaints and caveats about Anderson - he's precious, his characters have no grounding in the real world - can be made about Moonrise Kingdom, but so what?

Anderson and his actors are able to convey more genuine feeling through these devices than most filmmakers can with more-traditional means.

One knock against some of Anderson's previous efforts is that they're too clever - so clever, in fact, that the humanity gets sucked out of them. That doesn't happen here.

The adults who are so desperate to return the kid fugitives to their care actually envy the children's freedom, irresponsibility and, yes, love -- in a word, their youth: The kingdom that makes exiles of us all.

The frustrating Anderson is improving, and he may one day shed the collegiate hipster aura that infuses his work.

The plot isn't as fetching as the presentation, starting with the tersely whimsical dialogue. There aren't punch lines for big laughs, but rather a seamless series of non sequiturs for smiles.

The countdown has begun for filing your income tax return (ITR). It was easier in the previous financial years, when you just handed your Form 16 over to your chartered accountant to file the income tax return on your behalf. The chartered accountant would take care of your paperwork, Form 16, accuracy of the return and hand over the ITR receipt on the completion of the process. But starting this year, you are required to file tax returns online especially if you are earning an annual salary of . 10 lakh or above. The tax portals are very user friendly and decode most of the technical details for the tax payers. However, the onus lies on you to enter every financial detail appropriately and file an accurate tax return.

Generally, due to the inbuilt mechanisms, returns filed electronically would have all the information mandatorily required to be filled in. These would include residential status, gender, TAN of the employer etc.

The ITR would be considered inaccurate if certain details mentioned in the return are wrong or certain details are missing altogether. The inaccuracies can have financial implications for the tax payer as a particular deduction, tax credit or loss may not be considered by the tax department; and this will enhance the tax liability of the tax payer. At times, there could be penal consequences too.

Common Misses

The most common detail which tax payers forget to mention in their income tax return is the interest income from bank FDs. Sometimes it could be due to lack of awareness or the delay in the TDS certificate to be given by the banks. Generally, banks give the TDS certificate in February or March every year. Tax payers fill the ITR details as mentioned in the Form 16 and leave out such details which are usually not mentioned in it.

Tax payers should refer to tax credit statement in Form 26AS to ensure that their income, TDS and tax payment details are completely reflected in the tax return form.

The second missing element could be claiming deductions/exemptions which the tax payer is entitled to, but are not reflected in the Form 16. Often employees invest in tax saving instruments after submitting their investment declaration to the employer. In such cases the Form 16 will not have complete details of such investments.

Most individuals avail deduction of interest on repayment of home loan. However, not many are aware that any interest paid on home loan for reconstruction, renewal and repair of the house property is allowed as deduction up to a maximum of . 30,000, subject to the overall limit of . 1,50,000. Hence before filing the return you should look at every investment and loan and understand the tax treatment for them.

For Salaried Class

You have to mention details of your rental income, capital gains or income from other sources (such as bank interest, etc.) earned during the corresponding financial year. Moreover, if you qualify as resident and ordinarily resident in India and have overseas assets, the details of the same should be mentioned in appropriate columns in the income tax return.

Self employed individuals

A self employed individual should choose the correct income-tax return form (ITR-4/4S - which is meant for individuals having income from a business or profession). A self employed individual can take full advantage of all business expenses. You can also claim depreciation on work related assets like laptops, computers, furniture, UPS and vehicles. Hence the bills of capital expenditures should also be maintained.

It is observed that those who file their tax return themselves often enter the amount of gross salary instead of the amount of taxable salary in the tax return form. This often results in taxpayers receiving demand notices from the tax department. Apart from salary, the section of the tax return on deduction under Chapter VIA (deductions under Section 80C on various investments, Section 80D on health insurance premium, Section 80G on donations, etc.) should be filled in accurately.

Further, the details of interest on housing loan should be entered correctly. The tax payer should obtain a final certificate from the housing finance company and enter the amount as per the final certificate. The amount reflected in Form 16 is based on the provisional tax certificate issued by the housing finance company which is submitted to the payroll department.

If you file your return online and realise later that there is a mistake in the ITR, you can rectify it by filing a "revised" income-tax return. However, a revised income-tax return can be filed only if the original income-tax return is filed within the due date. The revised income-tax return can be filed within 2 years from the close of the financial year or before the completion of assessment by tax officer, whichever is earlier.

Moreover, if the original return was filed electronically then revised return should be filed electronically as well. And if the original return was filed physically then the revised return too shall be filed physically.
