Pregnancy diary: week 26 ? birthday (mine, not bump's)

This week has seen us on the approach to 30, in more ways than one: I?m 26 weeks pregnant, so I?m sure 30 weeks will be here before I know it given how fast this trimester has gone; and I celebrated my 29th birthday, so only 1 year left to go before I turn 30. I say ?celebrated?, but this consisted of a very quiet celebration just the 3 (or 4 if you like) of us. In previous years I?ve always organised some sort of get together with friends and family, like a tea party or pudding party or bar evening. But this year I feel like my birthday has crept up on me without me realising where time was flying to, and I?m sure the main reason is being pregnant and not having much energy to think of things other than getting through each day and week as it comes and not planning very far ahead at all. We did have a small celebration on Saturday with my parents. Maybe next year I will have more energy and organisational ability to plan a party for my 30th?. we?ll see!

Wearing one of two dresses that I own which fit over bump! This week has been too hot to wear jeans and t-shirts/blouses like I have been since bump started growing.

This year was also the first time in my life that I worked on my birthday! Having a summer birthday meant that as a child I was always on school holidays, and quite often we were away on our family summer holiday. As an undergraduate and Masters student I also managed to escape working in a summer job on my birthday itself. Then during my PhD (when I could have taken the day off anyway) my birthday happened to fall at the weekend for the two summers. The first year I had a ?proper? job was 2 years ago, when I was pregnant with Andrew, but we?d booked a holiday for the week of my birthday, so I escaped yet again! Last year I was on maternity leave, and that brings us to this year. I toyed with the idea of booking a day?s annual leave, but then I thought that it might actually be interesting to experience working on my birthday for once, being as I?m not going to be working for the next few years once baby arrives and I?m a stay at home mum. I have to say that it really wasn?t a bad day at all! I had a productive morning working, and then met Tom for lunch in town where we both work. Then my work friends and I went out for cake/ice-cream treats later in the afternoon, and they presented me with some lovely gifts (chocolates, non-alcoholic wine, flowers, notecards) and a pretty card. The hardest part of the day was roasting in the office! We are on the top floor of 4, and there is very little air circulation. Being pregnant doesn?t help as I?m already warmer than usual. It was great to cool down with a nice relaxing swim after work, and then my boys and I had a quiet tea together at home. We?ve decided to go out for a family meal on Sunday, because I?d rather sit in a restaurant with the smell of food at lunchtime than in the evening when I still feel nauseous.

Although I?m approaching 30, this doesn?t seem to bother me (yet!) I guess I don?t think of my age in numbers, but rather how old (or young) I feel. When Tom and I discussed our thoughts on having children, both before and after we got married, I said that it would be amazing if we could have two by the time we were 30. Given that Tom is 6 months younger than me, it?s my age that was the limiting factor. I didn?t take it for granted that we would be able to have children as quickly as we did once we decided the time was right to start a family, but I?m very happy that in the end I?ll have reached my (what once seemed like a) dream of being a four-person family by my 30th birthday.

Since I?ve had Andrew (I was 27 when he was born), and we?ve met new parents and their children at groups, I get the feeling that I?m on the young side for being a first time mum amongst the mums that I?ve met. Of course this is a big generalisation, and there are of course mums younger than me in Cambridge, but on the whole it seems like there are quite a lot of mums older than me. As my own mum was 24 when she had me (her first child), this has got me interested in how the average age of first time mums has changed over just one generation. So I trawled through loads of birth stats on the government?s Office of National Statistics website. The latest published data I could find was for 2008 (so 3 years before Andrew was born), and the earliest published data in the same format that I could find was for 1988 (so 5 years after I was born), but this is close enough for my interest here. Below is a graph showing what I found (I love graphs, I?m such a scientist!)?.

The blue line shows the average (mean) age in years of mums when they gave birth (whether that was their first, second, fifth, fifteenth etc. child). We see that it rose steadily from about 27 in 1988 to 29.5 in 2008. Then if we look at the red line ? this shows the average age of mums when they gave birth to their first child ? it rose steadily from about 25 in 1988 to about 27.5 in 2008. The green line shows the average age of married mums when they gave birth to their first child. Interestingly, this line starts below the blue one at about 26.5 in 1988 and then crosses the blue line to end up at just over 30 in 2008. Then, just out of interest, I plotted (in orange) the average age of dads when their baby was born (all births, so whether it was their first, second, fifth, fifteenth etc. child) ? I could only find more recent data on this, from 1998 onwards. We see that generally dads have been older than mums when their children were born, over 30 years old on average since 1998.

So where do I stand in relation to the ?average? then? Well Andrew was my first, in 2011, when I was 27, and I was married, so I?ll look at the green line. I see that I was well below average (given that it is likely to have risen beyond 30 years since 2008, given the general trend). Even when I look at all first births, including those to mums who weren?t married (red line), I was still below average. So my anecdotal evidence of feeling pretty young as a mum around here could have some truth. I?d be even more interested to see these kind of stats just for our area, because I suspect this kind of thing might differ by area, depending on the demographics of the mums living there. It seems also that my mum was below the average age to have me at age 24 in 1983 when she was already married (imagine the green line extending downwards to 1983 at the same angle as where it starts). Interestingly, both Tom and my Dad were even further below the average age of dads when their first child was born ? Tom was 27 (exactly ? Andrew and he share the same birthday!) and my Dad was 25. I guess there are many reasons why people are having children later these days than in the 1980s, one of which could be that women are choosing to start in their career first and then have children. For the moment I am happy that being a mum is my career, and I will pursue other career interests in a few years time, most likely when our children are at school. For us, 27 was a great age to have a baby, but I know that every family situation is different and that there is no ?right? age to have a baby ? what?s right for one family isn?t the same as what?s right for another.

I hope this little excursion into statistics and graphs has been interesting for you as well as for me. As I said, I love looking at numbers like this ? one of the best parts of analysing results from the research project I?m working on (and others I?ve done in the past) is making attractive?graphs that show the information more clearly to me than a table of numbers. Brazil says Chevron oil leak larger than estimated

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? An investigation by regulators found that Chevron Corp. could have prevented an offshore oil leak last year and that the spill was larger than previously estimated, the head of Brazil's National Petroleum Agency said Thursday.

Magda Chambriard, who runs the agency known as ANP, said at a news conference that about 155,000 gallons seeped into the ocean from cracks in the seabed floor near a Chevron well in the Frade field. Previous estimates put the leak at about 110,000 gallons, which a Chevron statement said is the figure it sticks by.

The ANP's full report will be released Friday. It will show "the accident could have been avoided if Chevron had conducted its operations while fully adhering to the regulations of the ANP and industrywide best practices, as well as its own procedure manual," Chambriard said.

She added that the agency would fine Chevron about the maximum allowed under Brazilian law, upward of $25 million. Chevron and driller Transocean Ltd. are facing an $11 billion lawsuit that a federal prosecutor filed earlier this year.

"We disagree with the report's characterization of our safety culture," Chevron's statement read. "We are confident that at all times during the Frade incident we acted appropriately and responsibly."

The crude began seeping from cracks in the ocean floor near a Chevron well in November. Two weeks after the leak, the ANP said the seepage was under control. But in March, oil again started leaking and Chevron voluntarily suspended production in the field.

Chevron, based in San Ramon, California, said after the November leak that it had underestimated the pressure in an underwater reservoir, so crude rushed up a bore hole and eventually escaped into the surrounding seabed some 230 miles (370 kilometers) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The oil seeped from at least seven narrow fissures on the ocean floor, all within 160 feet (50 meters) of the wellhead. No oil reached Brazilian shores.

The leak paled in comparison with the 2010 spill from a BP PLC well in the Gulf of Mexico, which at its peak spewed more than 2 million gallons (7.5 million liters) a day. Brazil also has had bigger oil spills than Chevron's.

In 2000, crude spewed from a broken pipeline at the Reduc refinery in Rio de Janeiro's scenic Guanabara Bay, spewing at least 343,000 gallons into the water. Just a few months later, more than 1 million gallons of crude burst from a pipeline operated by the state-controlled Petrobas oil company into a river in southern Brazil. Brazil's worst oil disaster was in 1975, when an oil tanker from Iraq dumped more than 30 million gallons into Rio's bay.

Earlier this year, Brazilian authorities banned Chevron from any new drilling or water-injection activities at working wells in the country.

"For the moment, in order for Chevron to drill, it must prove to the ANP that it will be doing so in an absolutely safe way, recognizing its errors and mitigating those errors. ... We need to avoid the possibility of another accident," Chambriard said.

Chevron has said it followed all laws and best practices while drilling offshore, but the ANP said Thursday that its investigation found the company at fault.

An ANP emailed statement said the investigation determined Chevron "was not able to correctly interpret the geology and local fluid dynamics" of the reservoir when the leak occurred. It blamed Chevron's water-injection practices for the reservoir pressure.

The ANP also said that Chevron "dismissed" test results from drilling three other wells in the same area that "indicated the necessity to change the project" and that the company "contradicted its own manual" by not using enough pressure while drilling an exploratory well.

The regulator said further that Chevron didn't respond properly once the leak began.

"Despite strong indications of an underground blowout, Chevron was slow in acknowledging the situation, resulting in the initial adoption of ineffective methodology to control the well," the ANP email said. "If Chevron had identified the underground blowout immediately, the volume of oil released into the sea would have been significantly lower."

The company disagreed.

"Chevron Brasil's rapid response to the November incident brought the well under control in four days. ... The well was successfully plugged and abandoned. We have and will continue to engage openly and transparently with all Brazilian authorities and regulatory agencies," the company's statement said.

In April, a Brazilian prosecutor filed an $11 billion lawsuit against Chevron and the Switzerland-based Transocean for both the leak in November and the one in March, alleging they caused environmental damage. Prosecutors also asked that Chevron be temporarily prohibited from sending any profits made in Brazil outside the country.

A month before that lawsuit, federal prosecutors filed criminal charges against 17 Chevron and Transocean executives accusing them of environmental crimes, of misleading ANP about safety plans and of not providing accurate information in the wake of the spill. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 31 years in prison.

Last week, however, federal police in Rio de Janeiro said their investigation into the oil leak, which was carried out because of the court cases, found that the spill caused no significant environmental damage.

Judges must still decide if the cases will go to trial, which would be a lengthy process given the number of defendants, the complexity of the case and the Brazilian legal system's room for numerous appeals.

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm F1.8 Lens ($899.99 direct) is a prime telephoto optic for the Micro Four Thirds camera system, and as such can be used on interchangeable lens cameras manufactured by Olympus and Panasonic. It produces a field of view equivalent to a 150mm lens in traditional 35mm photography, an ideal focal length for portraiture and telephoto image capture.

The lens itself is large when compared with other Micro Four Thirds lenses. At 2.5 by 2.7 inches (HD) in size and 10.8 ounces in weigh, it's larger and heavier than the 14-42mm zoom included with the Olympus PEN E-P3 ($899.99, 4 stars) and other PEN cameras. That compact zoom is 2.2 by 1.9 inches when collapsed, and weighs only 4 ounces.

Due to its size, the lens is probably best used on a more substantial body like the E-P3 or Olympus OM-D E-M5 ($1,299.99, 5 stars). Mounting the lens on a really compact camera like the Olympus PEN E-PM1 ($499.99, 4 stars) or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 ($799.99, 3.5 stars) will present difficulty in balancing, as the lens will make the camera very front heavy.

Build quality is excellent. The M.Zuiko 75mm has a metal lens barrel with a large focusing ring. Its design allows for very quiet focusing, which is a boon for video use, and the ring is there if you prefer the near silence of manual focus. Olympus does make the LH-61F Metal Lens Hood ($74.99) to match this lens, but it is not included. Using a hood can help increase image contrast, reduce flare, and protect the lens from damage while shooting. Even though our test shots showed no lack of contrast or evidence of lens flares, many photographers swear by hood use no matter what. Given the premium price that this lens commands, it's unfortunate that the hood is no included.

I used Imatest to measure the image sharpness recorded by the lens. At its widest aperture it managed 2,545 lines per picture height when paired with the Olympus PEN E-P3, which is well in excess of the 1,800 lines required for a sharp image. It only gets better as you stop it down, hitting 2,683 lines by the time you hit f/5.6. The Sigma 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro lens ($1,600, 4 stars), which covers the same field of view when used on a full-frame camera like the Nikon D800 ($2,999.95, 4 stars) with which we tested it, only manages 1,843 lines at its maximum aperture, but increases to 2,400 lines by f/4 and approaches 3,000 lines at f/8.

Imatest also measures distortion, which is a negligible 0.3 percent in a pincushion pattern. Distortion is usually more of an issue with zoom lenses and with wide-angle prime lenses than with telephoto optics, so this is not a surprising result. The collapsible Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH. lens ($399.95, 3.5 stars) displays a noticeable 1.7 percent barrel distortion at 14mm.

If you're a Micro Four Thirds shooter and want a fast telephoto optic for low light shooting or portraiture, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm F1.8 is an excellent performer. Owners of smaller bodies may find it a bit awkward to use, and it certainly isn't the lightest lens that you can pair with a compact interchangeable lens camera. It is razor sharp, and shooting at f/1.8 makes it possible to isolate your subject by blurring the background of your photo?what's more, the out of focus bokeh produced by this lens has a very smooth, creamy character, even when dealing with difficult backdrops that include foliage.

What can I say. Sprint is very slow when it comes to updates. Anyone who has been on the sprint network for the last few years are well aware of this. If you want Jellybean. Ditch Sprint and go to T-mobile. The only bad thing about that, is T-mobile's service is not that great in my area. I would not trade latest and greatest software for a solid network. At the end of the day the phone is for talking and texting. This can be done with a feature? (dumb) phone.

As a sprint customer I do wish that Sprint would train their in store sales reps to be honest. Telling any customer that if they buy the Galaxy Nexus phones they will be able to get updates before anyone else. Is just a flat lie.

I brought the Evo 4G LTE instead of the Galaxy Nexus. Because I knew Sprint would drag their feet with providing software updates. I mean why buy the Galaxy Nexus if you know your not going to get an update. With that being said you remove the bigest selling point of Galaxy Nexus. I have absolute no confidence in Sprint when it comes to staying current with software. Sprint just flat out sucks at it.

The only reasons I even deal with this below average software support from Sprint is 1.) You can't as of yet beat their unlimited data and 2.) In my area they have excellent call and data reception. I've tried the other big carriers and Sprint still came out on top.

It is NOT Sprint that provides software updates. It is the manufacturer of the phone. Sprint tests and approves the updates, but the manufactrer...LG, Motoroloa, HTC, Samsung, etc are the ones that actually produce the update. The Galaxy S2 just got ICS within the last month or so on ALL carriers. The Motorola Droids on Verizon just got ICS within the last couple weeks.

Neither Verizon or Sprint Galaxy Nexus have gotten the JellyBean update because they are CDMA networks and require additional steps to get an update out vs. the other networks that are GSM where Google can directly release the update. However, It is pretty much a sure thing that the Galaxy Nexus will get JellyBean way before any other phone does on Sprint. The Nexus S 4G was still the first phone on Sprint to get ICS...even if it was much later than its GSM counterparts. I would pretty much guarantee the Galaxy Nexus will get JellyBean well before your HTC 4G LTE does.

If updates are really that important and life changing for you then, yes, you need to be using T-mobile or AT&T or any other carrier that uses GSM and have a Nexus device. However, I would bet a majority of the people buy a phone for what it is at the time they buy it and don't even know or care about updates. There were tons of complaints in the Epic 4G forums when the phone was upgraded from Eclair to Froyo with a bunch of people asking how to go back to Eclair because they didn't like all the changes made to thier phone....same with the Froyo to Gingerbread update.

Legal experts say Paterno could have faced charges

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? If he were alive today, Joe Paterno ? the coach who stood for so long for character and integrity both on and off the football field ? could be looking at charges such as child endangerment, perjury and conspiracy.

Legal experts said emails and other evidence in the Penn State investigative report released Thursday suggest that Paterno may have misled a grand jury when asked when he first heard about Jerry Sandusky's misconduct, and show that Paterno and other university officials put boys in danger with their failure to report sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky more than a decade ago.

Duquesne University law professor Wes Oliver said the report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh reads like a prosecution case for a child endangerment charge against Paterno, then-President Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and now-retired vice president Gary Schultz. Oliver noted that a former top official in the Philadelphia Archdiocese was convicted of that charge in June for allowing a suspected pedophile priest to be around children.

"If you look at what happened here, it's very clear that they were aware that they had a pedophile on their campus," Oliver said.

Will Spade, a former Philadelphia prosecutor who worked on a grand jury investigation of priests about a decade ago, agreed: "Spanier, Paterno, Schultz and Curley are arguably responsible for endangering all of those kids that were abused later."

So far, the only two figures arrested in the alleged cover-up are Curley and Schultz. They were charged last fall with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse and are awaiting trial. They have denied any wrongdoing.

Spanier, who was ousted as Penn State president over the scandal, has not been charged, but a grand jury continues to investigate. Paterno died in January of lung cancer at 85.

Paterno family spokesman Dan McGinn declined to comment on the criminal legal issues on Friday.

At the very least, the Freeh report provides powerful ammunition to Sandusky victims looking to sue the university or Paterno's estate.

The report said that Paterno and the other university officials hushed up child sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky in 2001 for fear of bad publicity. Asked on Thursday whether the actions of the four men amounted to a crime such as conspiracy or obstruction, Freeh said that would be for a grand jury to decide. But the former FBI chief and federal judge said the evidence shows "an active agreement to conceal."

Freeh described Paterno as "an integral part" of that agreement. According to his report, Spanier, Schultz and Curley drew up a plan that called for reporting Sandusky to the state Department of Public Welfare in 2001. But Curley later said in an email that he changed his mind "after giving it more thought and talking it over with Joe."

The report also called into question the truthfulness of Paterno's grand jury testimony last year, when he was asked whether he knew of any abuse allegations against Sandusky before the 2001 episode in which Sandusky was spotted assaulting a boy in the locker room showers.

"I do not know of anything else that Jerry would be involved in of that nature, no," Paterno testified in a grand jury appearance that lasted only a few minutes. He added that a rumor "may have been discussed in my presence, something else about somebody. I don't know. I don't remember, and I could not honestly say I heard a rumor."

But emails published in the Freeh report suggest Paterno closely followed a 1998 police investigation of Sandusky that ended without charges. In an email captioned "Jerry," Curley asked Schultz: "Anything new in this department? Coach is anxious to know where it stands."

Paterno, "were he alive, he would probably be scrutinized right now, as we speak, by a grand jury," said Jeff Anderson, a lawyer who represents a young man suing Sandusky, Penn State and Sandusky's charity over claims of sexual abuse. "When he did give testimony, now revealed to have been dubious at best and false on its face, that is illegal perjury because it was given under oath. So he is exposed."

Perjury, though, is rarely charged and is famously difficult to prove at trial. A jury has to find corroborating evidence of the falsehood, and the lie has to be intentional, not a simple misstatement. In Paterno's case, prosecutors would have had to prove that Paterno had not simply forgotten about the 1998 investigation, according to University of Pennsylvania law professor Chris Sanchirico.

When the scandal broke wide open last November, Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly said Paterno was not an investigative target. On Friday, Kelly spokesman Nils Frederiksen refused to discuss the investigation, citing the confidentiality of grand jury proceedings.

Spanier's lawyers had no comment Friday but have denied he knowingly covered up Sandusky's crimes.

On the civil side, Paterno's role in the scandal could expose his estate to liability, said Altoona lawyer Richard Serbin, who has pursued lawsuits against the Roman Catholic Church and other institutions in Pennsylvania for the past 25 years. Paterno was considerably wealthy; he and his wife donated millions to the university, and in April the school paid millions in retirement benefits to his family and estate.

"When a responsible party passes away, that does not mean to say their wrongful conduct is excused by death," said Serbin, who does not represent any of Sandusky's victims. "Their estate becomes the representative of that person, and assets of their estate ... remain exposed to any verdict or judgment."

Heat Emergency Proclaimed in Macedonian Towns :: Balkan Insight

Macedonian authorities have set up so-called "preventive medical points" in urban areas to help people who cannot cope with the boiling heat in the Balkan country.

An official alert has been proclaimed in the capial, Skopje, and in Kumanovo, Veles, Sveti Nikole, Kavadarci, Gevgelija, Radovish, Strumica, Stip and Demir Kapija.

To avoid fatalities, the government is urging people to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun. The Health Ministry has told elderly people to stay indoors, and all residents to wear light clothes, hats, and protective glasses.

Kindergartens in most towns are being advised to keep the children indoors during the midday.

On Wednesday, the government decided that in the next seven days all public sector workers will work from 7 am to 3 pm. The government spokesperson Aleksandar Gjorgiev urged companies to join these work hours ?to spare their workers from the worst of the heatwave?. The government also urged companies that conduct outdoor activities, especially the construction industry not to expose their staff outdoors between 11 am and 5 pm. Special medical teams will check elderly and chronically ill persons, especially those living alone. A Code Orange heat alert has been declared in four areas in the country including the capital Skopje. This means intense weather situations with potential damage, injuries and casualties.

Companies have been told not to expose staff to the sun in the noon hours. On Tuesday, 25 construction firms were given official warnings, after inspectors found they had exposed workers to the sun over the midday.

?We will not tolerate firms that expose their workers to the sun [during the emergency],? Labour Minister Spiro Ristovski said.

The heat in Macedonia started unusually early this year. Since mid-June, temperatures have been bobbing around the 37-degrees mark.

The latest heat wave, which started last week, brought temperatures up to at least 40 degrees, and meteorologists warn that such conditions will remain at least till the end of the week.

Eastern New Mexico University offers master's program in nursing

Eastern New Mexico University has added a master's program in nursing to its curriculum. The new 36-hour online program will be available spring 2013.

ENMU began working with the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium. The NMNEC is implementing programs around the state to increase the number of nurses in New Mexico and qualified nursing instructors for future generations.

?This will be accomplished by establishing partnerships between local community colleges and their universities that will result in the availability of a baccalaureate-level curriculum in these communities,? said Leslie Paternoster, director of ENMU?s nursing program. ?Having a master?s degree in nursing education will allow nurses to work in the education field of nursing. Nurses who have a MSN can teach in both associate and baccalaureate degree programs. MSN-prepared nurses can also move up into management position in care facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes and clinics.?

ENMU is the second school in New Mexico to offer a master's degree in nursing. The university will accept 15 students for the spring 2013 semester.

?With the expected shortage of nurses, we felt that ENMU could offer this degree to help staff the nursing programs in the state,? said Paternoster. ?The nursing faculty at ENMU value the MSN in nursing education as we are part of the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium and feel it is our role to help the other nursing programs in the state to fill their faculty needs. Offering this degree will allow New Mexico nurses an education setting that is in New Mexico. A lot of nurses on the east side of the state go to Texas institutions to obtain their MSN degree.?
