They Ain?t Making Any More of Them: The Great Engineering Shortage of 2012

3483548677_3dc371b216_zCorner any up-and-coming Kevin Systrom wanna-be and have a heart-to-heart about the challenges of building a successful company and at some point you'll likely wander into the territory of bemoaning how tough it is to hire people with technical skills. At a party recently a startup founder told me "If you could find me five great engineers in the next 90 days I'd pay you $400,000." Which is crazy talk.

Azealia Banks Blasts T.I. On Twitter After Radio Show Comments

Young MC calls Tip a 'snitch' after he talked to Chicago morning show about her beef with Iggy Azalea.

T.I. has been involved in his fair share of rap beef. From Lil' Flip to Ludacris to Shawty Lo, Tip has held his own against some pretty serious dudes, but when it comes to the attacks from rookie female MC Azealia Banks, the Trouble Man wants no part of it.

Banks took exception when T.I.'s new artist Iggy Azalea landed the 2012 XXL Freshman cover earlier this year. The Harlem rapper had no problem lashing out at Iggy via Twitter, and when Tip defended his new protégé on DJ Drama's radio show in March, Banks fired shots at the King too.

"[Banks] wasn't the only one who felt funny about it. It was a trending topic people felt so funny about it," Iggy told MTV News earlier this month about her inclusion on the Freshman list.

Iggy wasn't chosen to be on XXL's coveted cover by the staff outright, instead she won a people's choice vote held on the magazine's website. The Australian-born rapper beat out 49 other rookie MCs to earn her spot along other notables like French Montana, MGK and Future. "Out of all those people, I had the most fans, it's not my fault. You should've voted for who you wanted because everybody else did and not to be rude, it was me."

T.I., however, hasn't been so diplomatic in his response. "The fact that she's speaking up on me and mine, I didn't even see it," he said about Banks when he appeared on the "Tony Sculfield and the Morning Riot" radio show in Chicago on Monday morning (April 23). "That's a bitch sh--, I'ma man. You ain't got no business addressing me. Get your man to address me, if you got a man, get him to address me and he and I can speak on it."

It doesn't seem like Banks, whose video for her single "212" is fast approaching 12 million views on YouTube, has taken heed. "@tip T.i .... Please shut the f--- up about this. Like seriously quit it," she tweeted hours after the Grand Hustle CEO's interview aired.

Banks continued with a full-on Twitter rant. "@tip funny how you have plenty of time to address me but have nothing to say to the dudes who been calling u at as a snitch forever," she wrote. "@tip it's dead... The streets already know what kind of dude you are. Stop making yourself look softer by dragging this out."

She then proceeded to delete all of T.I.'s songs from her iTunes. "LMFAOO every time I delete a t.i. song from my iPad I imagine him dying in some bloody horror film like being eaten by a zombie," she wrote.

Do our cameras have too many megapixels?

Featured

HTC One S

The first thing you'll notice about the HTC One S are its slender looks, but how do this new smartphone's features stack up? Msnbc.com's Ros... Read more

1 hr.

When buying a camera, one of the few things the average consumer reliably looks at?is the megapixel count, a measure that has been rising steadily for years.?But are those megapixels really making for a better picture? Or could they in fact be doing the opposite?

On Thursday, Nikon announced a new entry-level camera for photographers?perhaps buying their first DSLR. It has a nice new screen, a wide variety of lenses, and, surprisingly, a whopping 24 megapixels.

Now, that's a lot of pixels -- more, in fact, than many professional-level cameras out there. And while they're certainly useful for some things, like keeping a nice big image after cropping down a shot, that many pixels packed onto a modestly?sized sensor also has some drawbacks.

For one thing, the kit?lens that ships with the D3200 probably isn't the greatest, and many new photographers won't think to pick up a different one. It's not that it's a bad lens -- but no lens is perfect, and when you have that many megapixels, you can really start spotting the flaws, like the blurry areas at the edges or color distortion at the edges of bright objects.

But the D3200 is still a good camera with a good lens. The same can't usually be said for the lens and sensor in, say, a point-and-shoot camera or smartphone. Imaging companies like Omnivision and Sony are packing more and more megapixels onto tinier and tinier sensors, and as an engineering feat it's impressive, but it probably isn't making for better pictures.

The problem is that, when taking a photo, you need a clear image and plenty of light. Big, "fast" lenses gather lots of light and transmit it efficiently and with great clarity to the sensor, because compared to the size of the lens, small optical flaws and slight misalignments of elements don't produce that much of an effect. But imagine in a tiny camera system like one found in a smartphone. Everything is so small that even a tiny flaw in the lens have a major effect on the image.

And it's more than just that. Because the light-sensitive?pixels that make up sensors are so small on these tiny sensors, the image coming through the lens needs to be even more clear than on bigger cameras! Think of it this way: you print a big photo at 8x10 inches, and it has a certain amount of detail. Now say?you want to print that same exact amount of detail onto a picture the size of your thumbnail. Imagine how precise the printer would have to be!

An image that's high?in megapixels can still be low in detail. It could be out of focus, for one thing, but even if it's "in focus," the lens may not ever be able to resolve a clear enough image to give you your money's worth out of those 20 megapixels.

Lastly, there are other things companies could be doing with those pixels. Instead of making the pixels smaller and packing more onto the same size sensor, they could make them bigger and?more sensitive, improving the camera's performance in low light. Or they could change the way the camera detects and interprets color, to give a more vibrant and reliable look.

The iPhone 4S's camera is a good example of how improving the camera means more than?just?upping the megapixels. It uses a new and better way of organizing the image sensor and has a genuinely decent lens on it -- and those contribute far more to the quality of the camera than the extra megapixels. Likewise, Fujifilm's latest pro camera doesn't beat the competition on sheer pixel count, but claims better image quality due to a more advanced way of organizing the individual?blue, red, and green pixels on the sensor.

More megapixels isn't inherently?a bad thing. But it can be, and?there are trade-offs every photographer should be aware of, especially if they are thinking of buying a new camera.

Gmail Meter brings detailed analytics to your inbox

Just in case a constantly increasing unread messages counter isn't providing enough details about the flow of messages to your inbox, the Official Gmail Blog has pointed out the Gmail Meter tool for detailed monthly activity breakdowns. A Google Apps script developed by Romain Vialard, it can show you stats on volume, daily traffic, traffic pattern, email categories, time before first response, word count and thread lengths; providing an even deeper dive than Google's own Account Activity dashboard. Setting this up on one's account requires setting up a Google docs spreadsheet and then installing the script on it and requesting a report, there's a YouTube video embedded after the break and a tutorial linked below to help you along. On the plus side, now when someone asks "why haven't you responded to my email yet?", you can show them they're still well within the average time before first response window.

Samsung 'GT-i9300' sighted in Brazil, may or may not be the Galaxy S III

GT-i9300

If you've been following the stories of rumored devices within Samsung's 2012 line-up, you may be familiar with a phone with the product number GT-i9300. When we first caught a glimpse of this device in late March, it was rocking a buttonless setup, with software-based on-screen keys in the style of the Galaxy Nexus. But if the latest set of leaked images from ?Gizmodo Brazil? are to be believed, then the phone may have grown a set of physical buttons over the past month. Photos have leaked today claiming to show the front and back of the device, and aside from the different button setup, they match last month's leaked pics pretty closely. Note the front-facing camera position and the trim around the device's corners.

The images are reportedly from a manufacturing source, which claims the GT-i9300 is a high-end product, with a 12MP rear camera (with dual-LED flash) and a high-quality display. It's also reportedly thinner than the Galaxy S II, but slightly heavier, with a larger screen. Whether it's Samsung's next flagship phone -- under the Galaxy S III name or some other branding -- remains to be seen.

As we discussed yesterday, we still know almost nothing about Samsung's next-gen plans. But all will be revealed at the launch event in London on May 3, and we'll be there to bring you full coverage of whatever's unveiled.

Yoga for Beginners: Ideas to Get You Started

Life inside the Big Apple might be demanding and draining. One of the things you can do to chill out after having a long day of work in New York City is yoga exercise. Yoga, which indicates ?union? in Sanskrit, is actually a concentration that strives to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit. Once you find out about yoga, you most likely think about physical moves assumed for the duration of sessions. These are named ?asana?, that basically suggests ?seat?. Asana are just one part of the total system of yoga. Furthermore, it entails various other aspects for example dhyana or meditation, dharana or focus, along with samadhi or liberation.

Lots of sorts of yoga have invented through the years. Should you be looking for yoga for beginners courses in New York City, you may possibly notice many of them give vinyasa as well as hatha yoga. Hatha yoga is a lot more light and slower paced, working on basic stretches and inhaling and exhaling routines. Vinyasa yoga is just a bit sophisticated, with increased lively, brisk exercises. Both of these are wonderful yoga styles to get started with as a newbie, however, you might want to question your gyms employees which one they would suggest in your case.

Whilst you may continually start off practicing yoga alone with videos or diagrams as a manual, nothing can beat enrolling in an actual yoga for beginners class at a nearby health and fitness center. Getting a coach to help you and check out on your posture is the greatest approach to learn the concepts of yoga. Without having coach to adjust your postures, you could possibly end up working on the different asana wrong without even being aware of it.

In New York City, yoga instruction could cost you lots of money subject to which fitness center you enroll in. The great thing is besides paying for the instructional classes, you dont need to to pay for much else. All you need for your yoga for beginners courses are a yoga mat along with comfy work out garments. Always remember, yoga is completed on the ground and without athletic shoes, and that means you do not need to spend on high-priced gym equipment or running shoes.

Just before you start your New York yoga training sessions at the gym, you should become acquainted with some elementary guidelines.

* As mentioned before, yoga is performed barefoot, therefore youve got to leave your shoes and socks outside the yoga studio. Most studios or gyms have lockers or cubbyholes to safely store your shoes.

* Gadgets like mobile phones should be switched off and left inside your bag or locker. Remember, yoga is all about meditation and relaxing your mind, body, and spirit. Having a mobile phone ring during a session can be annoying and disruptive.

* Communicating with your instructor is important, especially if youre new. You dont have to be embarrassed about being a beginner; everyone has to start somewhere. If youre having trouble with a pose or exercise, ask your instructor for assistance.

* Arrive early. You will need time to put away your things and set down your mat, so you should arrive around 10 minutes before the session starts.

The author is looking for a yoga instructor who can teach yoga for beginners.

'Game Of Thrones' Establishes Kid-Killing Trend

Yet another child lost his life on the latest episode of the HBO fantasy series.
By Josh Wigler

If three's a trend, then infanticide is definitely trending in Westeros.

The latest episode of "Game of Thrones" marks three hours in a row that have concluded with the death of a child. But poor Lommy Greenhands wasn't the only one to die this week, either, as another member of the Night's Watch fell to the sword — and he wasn't even with his fellow sworn brothers north of the Wall!

Get more on Lommy and Yoren's deaths in the latest episode of "Watching the Thrones," viewable below. And keep on reading for all the good, bad and ugly from this week's episode!

The Good
»Brienne of Tarth has arrived! Season two has already introduced many new key players to the Seven Kingdoms, but Brienne is easily one of the biggest of the newbies, both literally and figuratively. Gwendoline Christie brings the character to life perfectly as one of "King" Renly's most loyal servants. Her introduction via combat against Ser Loras is one of the highlights of "A Clash of Kings," and it was adapted fantastically for the small screen. Great work all around.

»Speaking of great work, one of my favorite Tyrion chapters in the entire series (wherein he tests Pycelle, Littlefinger and Varys' loyalties through their ability to keep a secret) premiered in this week's episode, and it was fantastic. That one-two-three fast one hinges entirely on Tyrion's thought process in the books, and even without his direct point of view, his mastery over the game of thrones shines through phenomenally in the show's rendition of the sequence thanks to Peter Dinklage and editing wizardry. Again, incredible job.

»My love for Theon Greyjoy knows no bounds. That's probably a hard concept to wrap your head around as you see the Stark turncoat's actions play out throughout the season, but his arc is perhaps my very favorite in George R.R. Martin's epic tale. Alfie Allen and the show's writers are doing a remarkable job with Theon and Pyke, and his torment over choosing a side — either the Starks or his biological family — comes through tremendously. Keep your eye on this one... it gets a whole lot darker before you'll see any light.

The Bad
»Would you look at that: not a single bad scene in the entire episode! I suppose it would have been nice to see Dany again, or gotten more progression with Dragonstone, but those are minor nitpicks that will be corrected next week. Of course, even if there was no bad, there was plenty of ugly. And on that note...

The Ugly
»Tyrion is one of few characters on the show you're pretty much always rooting for, but even he hit a low this week in how he handled arresting Pycelle. The maester deserved his punishment, but lopping off the poor old man's beard? That's just cruel!

»And yes, naturally, there was another child death. That's "Game of Thrones" for you. If the slaughter of the bastards and the sacrifice of Craster's son didn't do it for you, Lommy's death certainly should have sold you on the dangers of Westeros. Sad to see him go, but let's be honest — better him than Arya or Gendry!

»Finally, let's pour one out for Yoren. I hated losing him in the books, and it was even worse to see him go on the show. But if you have to go, go down swinging like Yoren, I suppose. If nothing else, his death gives Arya another reason to hate the Lannisters. That way lies many, many badass things.

Tell us what you think of this week's episode in the comments or or hit me up on Twitter @roundhoward!

LG renames Optimus LTE to Optimus True HD LTE, disses Samsung's HD Super AMOLED

Image
While the Optimus LTE's already made its way to South Korea, Japan and the US (in the guise of the Spectrum and the Nitro HD), LG's decided to give this dual-core handset a new name ahead of its Hong Kong launch at the end of this month. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Optimus True HD LTE. Alas, the "true HD" part here doesn't actually mean the phone's getting 1080p resolution on a 4.5-inch panel (which would be 490ppi; yet Toshiba's actually done it!); but we were told that 'tis really just a dig at Samsung's HD Super AMOLED technology -- you know, the magic behind that 4.65-inch screen on the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S II HD LTE.

Simply put, LG doesn't think that 1,280 x 720 on PenTile counts as HD due to the lower number of sub-pixels; and while it's at it, the company also criticized AMOLED's over-expressed colors and higher power consumption in "normal user environment" -- for the latter, LG showed that its AH-IPS has a more consistent power consumption across varying levels of overall whiteness. You can see the relevant slides after the break.

Of course, we've already expressed (twice) how much we like the HD Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy Nexus. The clearness issue now is much less noticeable when compared to the original Super AMOLED; but as for color accuracy, many of us are indeed deceived by the vibrancy that we naturally enjoy -- except when you need to inspect photos, of course. Regardless, we're pretty sure that it's only a matter of time before Samsung strikes back with a, ahem, "true HD" Super AMOLED (Plus) panel -- hopefully in time for the upcoming Galaxy S III.
