Michelle Ku may only be a 16 year old high school student, but she has already nurtured her artistic talents in everything from painting shoes to taking nature photographs to creating environmentally friendly pieces out of recycled materials. She also grew up with a family quite different than those of her friends.

Her family supported her choice to go into the art field by making sure she started art lessons at the early age of 5 and also letting Michelle become a part of the International Baccalaureate Program for art. Michelle feels incredibly lucky to have such help from her family to allow her to do what she loves and wishes that other individuals with a love for art had the same support and freedom in their career choice.

ToonariPost (TP): How and when did you first start practicing your art (are you traditionally trained or self-taught)?

Michelle Ku (MK): I drew a stick man upside down when I was three and I?ve been drawing ever since! But I started art classes at around age 5, with lessons outside of school. I took a 3 year break from lessons, then started with another teacher when I was around 14. Right now I?m 16 and in high school. I?m in the International Baccalaureate program for Art, where you keep an investigative sketchbook and finish a piece every two weeks.

As for self-taught, last year, I taught myself how to paint on canvas shoes and started a shoe painting business, Tokushu Shoes! I also bought a Canon Rebel T3 and started teaching myself photography. This year I am working hard on learning Photoshop and it is so challenging.Coffee helps!

TP: What sort of things were you learning while taking art lessons outside of school at such a young age?

MK: Each week our art teacher would go through how to do one drawing. Then, our homework would be to use the same sort of theme/idea but to make up our own picture. I remember one time we drew a snowman in class, and when I went home I drew a bunch of mice, some on helicopters and ladders, building a snowman together.

TP: How did you decide to become a part of the International Baccalaureate program for Art?

MK: I heard about Art IB in junior high, and I wanted to apply because it sounded super fun. There?s so much freedom because they basically let you do anything you want. You choose a theme, which can be changed throughout the year, and base your art around that. Right now, my theme is based on observations about the environment (how we interact with nature, making art from recycled/natural materials, and why we should be conserving the earth). Some examples of what I?ve done are: a recycled water bottle light fixture, a pop art painting of extinct animals, and a book sculpture.

TP: What mediums do you use for your art work? ?Which is your favorite and why?

MK: I can go through a pack of pencils a month, hehe. I absolutely love using acrylics, almost all my clothes are stained with paint at one point or another. I like acrylics because they are easy to use and very versatile.

Recently, I?ve fallen in love with digital painting in Photoshop and Sai as well. I also think that watercolor is a beautiful medium, and so fun to paint with. I?d say my favorite is traditional painting in general though, with any medium.

TP: Some of your artwork uses shoes for canvas. What made you decide to use shoes instead of another article of clothing for your work? What about this medium makes it difficult to use?

MK: It started when I saw a white, plain pair of shoes at the mall a long time ago, and was like ?WANT TO DOODLE!?. So I?ve had this thought in my head ever since, and then I finally bought a cheap pair and experimented with them. Most of the challenge comes from getting the paint to last and stay on. But more experimenting and googling has helped fixed this problem.

I?ve never really been the type of girl to have a million pairs of shoes. I usually just have one or two pairs I wear everyday. That?s why I chose to paint on shoes instead of, for example, hats or shirts. A new Audit report on fragility fractures, issued today by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), predicts that Brazil will experience an explosion in the number of fragility fractures due to osteoporosis in the coming decades.

Osteoporosis, a disease which weakens bones and makes them more likely to fracture, is thought to affect around 33% of postmenopausal women in Brazil. Fractures due to osteoporosis mostly affect older adults, with fractures at the spine and hip causing the most suffering, disability and healthcare expenditure.

Currently, about 20% of Brazil's population is 50 years of age or over and 4.3% is aged 70 or over. With average life expectancy projected to rise to 80 years in 2050, it is estimated that the total population will increase to 260 million. Around 37% will then be over 50 years of age, and 14% (around 36 million people) aged 70 years or over.

These projections serve as a dire warning to health authorities as well as to social institutions which care for the aged. In Brazil, around 153 to 343 hip fractures occur among every 100,000 people aged 50 and over. While today there are an estimated 121, 700 annual hip fractures, these numbers are predicted to increase by 16% in 2020, and by 32% in 2050.

Hip fractures are a major cause of suffering, disability, and early death in seniors. Various international studies show that around 20% of hip fracture sufferers will die within the year of fracture, but one study examining patients in various hospitals in Rio de Janeiro showed that as many as 35% died either in hospital or soon after discharge. Dr. Bruno Muzzi Camargos, President of the Associao Brasileira da Avaliao da Sade ssea e Osteometabolismo (ABrASSO), stated, "Given the future projections, osteoporosis and fragility fractures have become a health issue of immediate concern. We must implement nation-wide measures for early prevention, while ensuring that people at risk and especially people who have already suffered a fracture are appropriately diagnosed and treated to prevent future fractures. This is the only way that we can slow the rising tide of costly fractures. "

The 'Latin America Audit: Epidemiology, Costs, and Burden of Osteoporosis 2012' was prepared by IOF in cooperation with IOF member societies . It includes data from 14 countries throughout Latin America, and reveals the following key findings in Brazil:

A 2010 study of more than 4,300 women aged 50 and over found that 11.5% had sustained some kind of osteoporotic fracture and that 33% were osteoporotic.
An estimated 2.9 million Brazilian women over the age of 50 may be living with vertebral fractures, mostly undiagnosed and untreated. Vertebral fractures cause pain and disability, often resulting in a stooped back.
Vitamin D, made in the skin upon exposure to sunlight, is essential for bone and muscle strength. Yet despite Brazil's sunny climate, vitamin D deficiency is widespread throughout the population. In a recent study 60% of the healthy adolescent participants did not have adequate amounts of vitamin D.
The cost of treating fractures is enormous and growing. The approximate direct cost of treating a hip fracture in Brazil ranges from 3900 to 12,000 USD in private hospitals, with an average 11 days spent in hospital. This does not include the indirect costs associated with post-fracture care, rehabilitation, loss of productivity and long-term need for nursing assistance.
As in other countries around the world, there is a widespread problem of under diagnosis and under-treatment, even after fracture. A fragility fracture indicates a high risk of further fractures and should immediately trigger an assessment for osteoporosis. However, one study showed that, of 123 hospitalized hip fracture sufferers, not a single patient was discharged from the hospital with a referral for bone density testing or osteoporosis treatment.
The urban- rural divide is reflected in both incidence of fractures and in accessibility to diagnosis and treatment. There is a higher incidence of fractures among women living in cities than in rural areas. On the other hand, people living in rural areas often have no access to bone densitometry for diagnostic testing.

On the positive side, Brazil is one of the few Latin American countries which has declared osteoporosis as a national health priority. Professor Christiano Zerbini, IOF Board Member and Director of the Paulista Clinical Research Center in Sao Paulo, commented, "Brazilian researchers and health professionals are working to find answers to the problem of osteoporosis and related musculoskeletal diseases. For example, an important new multicentre prospective study, BRAVOS (Brazilian Vertebral Osteoporosis Study), will gather much-needed epidemiological data from six research centres across the country. We hope this data will lead to the development of a WHO Fracture Risk Assessment model (FRAX) for Brazil a tool to facilitate the identification of people at high risk of fracture. Among other necessary steps, this would be an important achievement in our efforts to reduce the burden of future fractures."

The authors of the Audit report call for more public awareness campaigns, osteoporosis training programmes for doctors, better accessibility to low cost testing and treatment, and more epidemiological research.

IOF President John A. Kanis stated, "IOF joins concerned Brazilian doctors and patient societies to call for the channelling of health care resources towards the prevention and care of age-related musculoskeletal diseases and fragility fractures. For the first time, several top cancer organizations are recommending that smokers and former smokers ages 55 to 74 years who have smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for at least 30 years get an annual low-dose CT (LDCT) ? a three dimensional X-ray ? to look for lung cancer.

The recommendations, put forth as a collaborative effort by the American Cancer Society, American College of Chest Physicians, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and National Comprehensive Cancer Network, were released this morning. They appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Each year, more Americans die from lung cancer than from breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. It has held its position for years as the second most common cancer for both sexes in the United States. Only prostate cancer is more common than lung cancer in men. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women.

If detected early enough, lung cancer can be treated and survival chances improved. Despite this, until now there had been no formal recommendations on screening tests for this deadly cancer.

?We now have an important and critical tool to screen for the most common cancer in America, and can reduce the mortality through this screening,? says Dr. John Deeken, assistant?professor in the division of hematology/oncology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Still, the question of whether every person at high risk for lung cancer should get an annual low-dose CT scan is not so simple. Since the type of CT scan used exposes the patient to radiation, albeit a low-level dose, there is a small health risk posed by this screening.

If doctors detect a questionable cancerous mass through a CT scan, they may have evaluate it further through a minor surgery called a biopsy. In this procedure, a doctor will take a sample of the tissue for further testing to determine if the mass really is a cancer. While some of these may be cancerous, there are always a certain number which are not ? meaning that the detection and subsequent surgery may not have been technically necessary.

The new recommendation also begs the question of who will be paying for the test itself.

?The cost of LDCT is currently not covered as a standard test,? says Dr. Chao Huang, lung cancer specialist at the University of Kansas Cancer Center. ?Therefore, it is difficult to recommend this test when patients may be burdened by the cost of this test year after year.?

?The key question is when will more insurance companies, and most importantly Medicare, start paying for these screening tests,? Deeken says.

And then there is the issue of how many Americans will fall under the guidelines ? and whether the resources exist to screen all of them.

?We currently do not have the infrastructure to manage the potential number of patients that would qualify for screening,? Huang says.

These issues aside, one thing is clear: screening CTs have been shown to save lives. Dr. Keith Mortman, associate professor of clinical surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine, explains that a major study in 2010 called the National Lung Screening Trial found a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer deaths in patients who were screened with low-dose CT scans as compared to those who got chest X-rays.

Dr. Herbert Kressel, a radiologist at Harvard Medical School, says that in light of this, the recommendation is a step in the right direction.

?Lung cancer is an important health problem with a poor prognosis when it is discovered at an advanced stage,? Kressel says. ?This study is important in further highlighting the importance of low dose CT screening for patients at high risk for lung cancer.?

There are many places that incur regulations that will not allow you to ride on their water. Check before you travel to an area and make sure that you are authorized to use the river for rafting purposes. ?

Outsourcing is becoming more popular as companies realise the cost benefits of allowing another company to manage a specific area of their business. This could be anything from outsourcing calls, to IT services, to HR and health and safety. Recently there has been a lot of media coverage about the cost advantages of outsourcing, with councils such as Gloucester City Council saving ?220,000 a year by outsourcing some of its revenue and benefits services.

Outsourcing is different from other relationships in the business world in that there is usually some form of contractual relationship and quite often some geographic distance. It is important to compensate for these barriers by completing necessary work and taking sufficient care of the relationship.

Finding a Vendor

Finding the right outsourcing company is important, and even more important is maintaining and evaluating this relationship.

The vendor selection process should be well thought out. A decision based on entirely on lowest price may be a decision that is regretted a few months down the line. When choosing an outsourcing company, compose a list of desired criteria as it is easy to forget key factors amongst the stress. Conduct interviews to be sure the vendor meets the criteria set out. Suggested areas of criteria:

Privacy ? it is important to manage who exactly has access to private or confidential information (such as customer records) in order to maintain expected security and privacy. Controlling the vendor?s access to this information is necessary.

There are undoubtedly other aspects which require careful management, depending on the business area which is outsourced, establishing a management program and keeping to it helps to ensure the relationship remains healthy.

Making the decision to outsource a key business area is a choice that can bring many benefits to both small and larger companies. Seeking long term cost savings is undoubtedly a major motive behind choosing to outsource, however, making this decision based solely with the intention of saving money can be detrimental to the success of outsourcing.

The outsourcing process requires time and investment in order to find the right vendor, build and maintain a relationship and to be able to adjust as a business to outsourcing, but when done effectively, can allow a business to really reap the rewards of outsourcing.

What seems more futuristic: flying cars or self-driving cars? They both sound a bit like science fiction, but they're both getting closer to becoming a reality. In the latest chapter of Google's efforts to develop a car that uses video cameras, radar sensors and lasers to navigate through traffic, the state of Nevada just granted Google the world's first license for a computer-controlled, driverless Toyota Prius. Meanwhile, this week we also checked in on the PAL-V (which stands for "Personal Air and Land Vehicle"), a two-seat hybrid car and gyroplane that runs on gas, biodiesel or bio-ethanol. In other transportation news, the Texas Central Railroad floated a plan to build a $10-billion bullet train that would run between Houston and Fort Worth, and Toyota officially unveiled its second-generation 2012 RAV4 EV, which features a Tesla powertrain.

We also saw green technology cropping up in unexpected places this week, like the $1-billion ghost town that will be built on virgin desert land in Lea County, New Mexico to test emerging green technologies. Construction on the ghost town is set to begin in late June. Milwaukee native Bryan Cera invented Glove One, a 3D-printed glove that doubles as a cell phone. And in Tokyo, participants heaved 100,000 LED lights into the Sumida River as part of the 2012 Tokyo Hotaru Festival. Although it certainly looked cool, that's a lot of LED bulbs to literally dump in the river, and it raises some questions about e-waste. GE found a more practical use for LEDs, unveiling a new LED light bulb to replace the 100-watt incandescent.
